Reiki [more...] What is Healing? All healing is based on the basic premise of tapping into the natural energy around us, and transferring it for the benefit of the receiver, to stimulate the body's own natural healing potential. The main types are Reiki, healing (spiritual), energy healing, human energy field healing. The theory is that everyone has a natural healing force or energy to keep the mind and body healthy. Due to various influences, such as stress, an inadequate diet, a negative attitude or other adverse factors, this healing energy becomes blocked. Healing then provides the energy to kick-start or unblock our own healing mechanism. Proponents of healing believe it can help mental and emotional problems and physical conditions, such as stiff necks. Healing cannot harm anyone. The Japanese word Rei-ki means 'Universal Energy', and came to the West in 1938. It is an ancient form of hands-on healing, revived from Tibetan Buddhist scripts by Mikao Usui in Japan in the late 1800s. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to the well-being of life. The energy is known as 'ki' in Japan, 'chi' in China, and 'prana' in India. Acupuncture, tai chi and yoga are also based on the free-flow of this energy in a person. For further details see What is Reiki?, or for more information about training read Training to be a healer or Reiki Master Spiritual Healers attune themselves to God and become a channel for energy that flows through their hands into the receiver. In many ways this is similar to Reiki healing. Healers see the body, mind and spirit as one inter-dependent unit and believe all three must work in harmony to maintain positive health. Healing is not associated with any religion or ideology. Healing can take place in groups or individually, and does not require removal of any clothes apart from the client's coat and shoes. Before treatment begins the client will be invited to discuss any emotional or physical problems experienced, and the healer will make notes. The client will be asked to sit in a chair or lie on a couch. The treatment commences with the healer attuning to the healing energy, then reading the client's body energy levels and locating blocked areas where healing is needed. Treatment can last from 20 minutes to an hour. The main organisation for spiritual healing in the UK is the National Federation of Spiritual Healers or NFSH, which was founded in 1954 and has over 6,000 members. There are also many other courses. For example, the Confederation of Healing Organisations (CHO) is composed of 13 self-administering organisations that offer courses (an example is given in the article below on training). The NFSH's courses last about 9 days, costing approximately £600 (2004). For more details: www.nfsh.org.uk Typically the courses of the CHO are longer taking one to two years of part time attendance. For example, the College of Psychic Studies in London offers an intensive course of 18 Saturdays over one year, or attending weekly two-hour classes over two years. The cost reflects this greater study and fees are from £800 to about £1,350 (2004). For a more information about the different types of training read Training to be a healer or Reiki Master This type of healing works with the Universal Energy to balance the aura, the energy field around the body. This means the healing takes place a few inches away from the body, and no touch is involved. To train as a Bio-Aura practitioner and to get a Diploma in Bio-Energy Therapy takes one weekend a month over nine months and costs £2,975. For more details www.bi-aura.com Barbara Brennan, author of Hands of Light and Light Emerging has her own school in the US and in Austria called the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Her courses involve self-healing, healing others and developing a spiritual connection. It takes 4 years to complete and costs $6000. For more details www.barbarabrennan.com Barbara Brennan believes all healers need both spiritual as well as technical training. In 'Hands of Light' she describes why she feels this is necessary, "I believe it is very important for the healer to have a lot of technical training: counselling methods, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and massage technique, as well as some knowledge of acupuncture, homeopathy and nutritional and herbal cures. The healer must have some knowledge of these methods to understand how they dovetail to make a healing a whole one, and to be able to communicate with the other people involved in the case. Various other health care methods may be indicated through the channel of the healer. The healer will need to know anatomy and physiology to help interpret the information she is receiving. Above all, the healer should be able to work with other medical professionals to help a client heal herself." |
